Written June 18, 2019
On April 29 – May 3, 2019, the IPP Far East Committee dispatched a delegation to visit Taiwan and Singapore. The trip delegation was headed up by Patrick Coyne, AIPLA’s Second Vice President, and Tiep Nguyen, the Far East Committee Chair.
While in Taiwan on April 29 and 30, the delegation took a tour of the Taiwan IP Court and provided presentations and conducted discussions with IP Judges on recent US case law and PTAB developments.
The delegation also visited the Taiwan Intellectual Property Office (TIPO), the Ministry of Justice, and the Investigation Bureau (MJIB) to provide presentations on recent US case law, new USPTO 101 & 102 Guidelines and PTAB developments.
At TIPO and MIJB, the delegation discussed the recently-enacted Taiwan Patent Act Amendment and spoke on trade secrets concerns Taiwan has with regard to its semiconductor industry, particularly encroachment from China.
The delegation also visited the Taiwan Patent Attorneys Association (TWPAA) to discuss IP issues and provided presentations to TWPAA members on recent US case law, new USPTO 101 & 102 Guidelines and PTAB developments.
The delegation wishes to express its thanks and deep gratitude to TWPAA for helping them set up meeting arrangements and handle other logistical issues while they were in Taiwan.
On May 1-3, the delegation headed over to Singapore, where it met up with the Association of Singapore Patent Attorneys (ASPA), the Singapore Group of the Asian Patent Attorneys Association (APAA) and the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (IPOS).
While at these IP organizations, the delegation also provided the above-noted presentations and conducted discussions on IP trends and issues in Singapore, including recent IPOS’ initiatives to be the Southeast Asia’s hub for fintech and AI technologies patenting. We appreciate the ASPA, APAA, and IPOS for hosting the delegation in Singapore.
