Duke Law | Elvin R. Latty Professor of Law

Arti Rai is Elvin R. Latty Professor and Faculty Director of the Center for Innovation Policy at Duke Law School.  She is an internationally recognized authority on patent law, administrative law, and biopharmaceutical innovation. Rai's extensive research on these subjects has been funded by Arnold Ventures, the National Institutes of Health, the Greenwall Foundation, the Kauffman Foundation, and the Woodrow Wilson Center. She has published widely in both peer-reviewed journals and law reviews.

From 2009-2010, Rai served as Administrator of the Office of External Affairs at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). As External Affairs Administrator, Rai led policy analysis of the patent reform legislation that ultimately became the America Invents Act and worked to establish the USPTO’s Office of the Chief Economist. Rai has also served as a public member of the Administrative Conference of the United States, on the National Human Genome Advisory Council, and on numerous National Academies of Science committees.
