Eric E. Silverman, PhD has nearly twenty years
of experience in intellectual property. His expertise spans a wide array of
intellectual property matters, including patent preparation, prosecution and strategy,
trade secret protection, counseling, licensing, and diligence. Eric has
counseled clients in a wide array of technologies including pharmaceuticals,
industrial chemistry, adhesives, oil and gas, biological testing, food science,
and consumer products.
Since 2022 Eric has been a Director,
Intellectual Property Counsel at BioMarin Pharmaceutical Inc. in San Rafael,
CA, where he is responsible for managing intellectual property surrounding BioMarin’s
small molecule patent portfolios as well as some non-patent intellectual
property matters. Prior to joining
BioMarin, was Director, Assistant Chief IP Counsel at 3M Company in St. Paul,
MN, where his role was split between 3M’s health care and consumer products
business groups. His responsibilities included leading the patent programs,
including preparation, prosecution, licensing, and joint development partnerships,
for both life-science business units such as 3M’s drug delivery systems division
(now Kindeva Pharmaceuticals) and food safety department (now part of Neogen
Corporation), as well as for consumer products such as Post-it® notes and
Scotch® brand home and office supplies. Before
joining 3M, Eric was an intellectual property attorney in the Washington, DC
offices of two international law firms.
Eric began his intellectual property career at the United States Patent
and Trademark Office, where he rose to the rank of Primary Examiner working in
the fields of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.
Eric holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University, a Doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Florida, and a J.D. from the George Washington University Law Center.
