Implicit Bias in the Law and Law Firms
Implicit biases are an unconscious product of our encounters from childhood through adulthood, influenced by everything from geographic location to social class, mental abilities, profession, age, gender, family and marital status. These ingrained impressions are further colored by our own observations, the media and stereotypes. Implicit biases have been proven to be an impediment to companies’ well-meaning diversity, equity and inclusion goals. This training will educate AIPLA's members on the science behind implicit (unconscious) bias and teach strategies for reducing its impact in the law firms in the areas of recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and performance evaluations. In addition, Kathlyn will discuss the business case for strengthening DEI, and provide information on trends in law firm DEI initiatives and client demands for measurable DEI goals and commitments.
